Types of Shoe Modifications

The type of footwear modification required will depend on your individual needs, footwear and functional goals. Common shoe modifications include:

  • Velcro straps to make shoes easier to put on and take off
  • Rocker soles to improve foot function and assist with walking
  • Sole raises to help accommodate differences in leg length
  • Alterations to accommodate orthoses and other medical devices
  • Other specialised footwear modifications to improve comfort and mobility

ROCKER SOLE MODIFICATIONS

A rocker sole changes the way the foot moves through the shoe during walking. It can help improve walking mechanics and reduce pressure through particular areas of the foot.

Rocker soles may be considered for people with certain foot conditions, limited joint movement or areas of excessive pressure, including where pressure reduction is important for people with diabetes.

Shoe Raises for Leg Length Differences

A shoe raise can be used to compensate for a leg length difference by adding material to the sole of the shoe. This can help improve balance and alignment and may make walking more comfortable.

Our Orthotists can assess your individual requirements and determine whether a shoe raise or another solution may be appropriate.

Crafted with precision, these modifications are tailored to the unique needs of each individual, ensuring that the solution is not only effective but also appropriate for their specific circumstances. Whether it’s alleviating discomfort, accommodating foot deformities, or providing additional support, the design of shoe modifications focuses on promoting an optimal balance between comfort and fit. Are there restrictions on the types of shoe modification that can be done?

Shoe modifications offer a versatile solution to address various foot-related issues and enhance comfort, but it’s crucial to acknowledge that not all shoe designs are suitable for modification. Factors such as the material and structure of the shoe, limited interior space, integrated features like built-in arch support, and extreme shoe styles can impact the feasibility of modifications. Consulting with your Orthotist becomes paramount in navigating these considerations. During a consultation, your Orthotist will assess the specific characteristics of your existing shoes and provide valuable insights into the types of modifications that can be safely and effectively implemented. This collaborative approach ensures that the chosen modifications align with your individual needs and the nature of the footwear. Additionally, it allows for discussions about any manufacturer guidelines, preserving warranties, and maintaining the integrity of the shoe. Ultimately, the consultation process is integral to finding the most suitable and personalised modifications for your footwear, promoting both comfort and functionality.
