Helmet Therapy

At Ability Prosthetics and Orthotics, helmet therapy is used to gently support and guide your child’s natural head growth, helping to improve overall head shape over time. Each cranial remoulding helmet is custom-made for your child and is typically worn for up to 23 hours per day. The treatment works by redirecting growth in a controlled and pain free way as your child develops.

As part of the assessment process, we carry out a comprehensive clinical evaluation supported by an advanced 3D scan with the latest technology. This allows us to accurately assess your child’s head shape and growth patterns. Families are then provided with clear, evidence-based information to help them decide whether helmet therapy is appropriate for their child.

At Ability Prosthetics and Orthotics we use the market leading Talee® Helmet from Invent Medical. Talee® is like no other cranial orthosis. The revolutionary 2 stage treatment feature provides the controlled growth and improvement of 2 helmets in a single orthosis while ensuring unparalleled comfort and stability. It is the most comfortable and advanced 3D printed cranial orthosis on the market, offering effective, yet gentle care. Every day little patients are successfully treated with Talee in over 40 countries around the world

Will we need helmet therapy?

We understand that considering helmet therapy can feel like a big decision, and parents often have many questions. Our team is focused on providing clear, supportive guidance so families can better understand their child’s head shape and explore all available options.

Whether helmet therapy is recommended depends on your child’s individual presentation and the degree of cranial asymmetry. In younger infants, we also offer cranial monitoring appointments, allowing progress to be tracked over time while positioning strategies or alternative interventions are trialled before helmet therapy is considered. If you are considering helmet therapy, we also recommend obtaining a referral from your GP or paediatrician prior to your appointment

What Is the Ideal Age for Helmet Therapy?

Helmet therapy is generally most effective between 4 and 7 months of age, when rapid skull growth allows for more efficient reshaping. In some cases, treatment can still be beneficial up to around 12 months of age, before skull flexibility decreases and the fontanelles begin to close.

At our clinic, we commonly assess and manage a range of cranial shape variations, including:

  • Plagiocephaly
